Derrick Lewis gives us our FanSided MMA Awards Funniest Moment of the Year
After knocking out Alexander Volkov at UFC 229, Derrick Lewis dropped his pants in the Octagon and delivered the Funniest Moment of 2018
At UFC 229 in October, Conor McGregor was taking on his arch-nemesis and the reigning lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov. This marked the return of McGregor after nearly a two-year layoff from the MMA leader. The fight had been built up since April 2017 when McGregor tossed a dolly through a bus at the Barclays Center on Brooklyn, NY, attempting to go after Nurmagomedov.
As the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas became the epicenter of the sports world on October 6, Nurmagomedov would ultimately get the best of McGregor, finishing him via fourth round submission.
But before Nurmagomedov and McGregor stepped in for the battle that night, then No. 2 ranked heavyweight Derrick Lewis took on Alexander Volkov in a matchup of two sluggers always looking for the knockout.
Volkov decisively ran roughshod over Lewis for two rounds and the majority of the third. With 17 seconds left in the fight, Lewis, who had been struggling to stay up on his feet at the time, loaded up a right hand and threw a hay-maker punch that connected on the chin of Volkov, sending him to the canvas. Lewis would finish the fight with brutal hammerfists, ending the fight with just 10 seconds left on the clock.
After the fight, Lewis dropped his pants in exhaustion. With his shorts hanging on his shoulders, the crowd went into pandemonium as Bruce Buffer announced the official decision.
Joe Rogan then came over to Lewis and asked him why he took his pants off.
"My balls was hot," said Lewis.
In a stoic and easy-going voice, Rogan responded with, "I understand…"
Lewis proceeded to break down his performance in classic Derrick Lewis fashion.
"I told them boys… I got nothing but heart," he said. "Everybody keep on underestimating me. (Expletive), I ain't all technical and all that but I'm getting there… (Expletive) it."
As the replay of the knockout heard around the world played over the television sets, Rogan described the knockout to Lewis, reiterating that Lewis was looking for the big shot to put the fight away. Rogan then asked Lewis to describe the knockout in his words.
Lewis started out by saying President Donald Trump had called him before the fight, telling him to knock out Volkov, who is from Moscow, Russia. In a joking manner, Lewis said that Trump told him to "knock this Russian (expletive) out because they keep making him look bad on the news."
At this point, the interview had gone completely off the rails.
Rogan, trying to keep himself from bursting with laughter in-front of the biggest PPV buying audience in UFC history (2.4 million buys), then brought up the conversation of Lewis possibly fighting for the title. As he was taking off the red tape from his gloves, Lewis wasn't having any thoughts to fighting for the title any time soon.
"I need to sit my black (expletive) down and do some more cardio," Lewis said. "The (expletive) you talking about right now? I ain't trying to fight for no title right now, not on no gas tank like that. (Expletive)…"
To put the finishing touches on an all-time hilarious moment, Lewis told Rogan he would love to come on his podcast (The Joe Rogan Experience) in the coming weeks.
"Maybe next week or some time, or two weeks from now, I'm gonna come on your show and smoke some weed with you," said Lewis.
"Anytime sir, anytime," responded Rogan. "And you got the best Instagram in the game, I'll tell you that right now."
Two minutes after the interview, as Rogan returned to his seat octagon side, the broadcasting crew of Jon Anik, Dominick Cruz and Rogan all gloated with laughter over what they had just heard.
"He's a genius," said Cruz.
"He's such a character," added Rogan.
"If he can't parlay that into an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, I don't know what to tell you," said Anik.
"That dude (Lewis) could wake me up at four in the morning and I would start the studio up," said Rogan with laughter.
Coincidentally, just one month later at UFC 230 in New York City, Lewis was headlining the Madison Square Garden fighting for the heavyweight title against Daniel Cormier. Lewis ultimately fell in a second round submission.
